Business Finland has granted funding for AGCLIMATE, a major national co-innovation project that develops science-based solutions to measure and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural lands. The project also creates new business opportunities for climate-friendly technologies, products, and services.

Agriculture is responsible for a substantial share of greenhouse gas emissions in the food supply chain. AGCLIMATE focuses on improving the accuracy and usability of field-level measurements — particularly carbon balance and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions — and integrating this information into farm- and product-specific carbon footprint assessments. The project’s innovations promote climate-smart farming, increase transparency, and strengthen the international competitiveness of Finnish companies.

“In AGCLIMATE, scientific results are turned into practical solutions for everyday farming. Reliable data becomes usable for climate-friendly business and decision-making,” says Research Professor Jari Liski, Project Leader at the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute leads the project, working together with Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and the University of Helsinki. Business partners with their own R&D subprojects include Valio, Hankkija, Vaisala, Datasense, and Cense Analytics, while Atria, HKFoods, and Lantmännen take part in the steering group.

AGCLIMATE is the largest single project within Valio’s Food 2.0 programme, which aims to make Finland’s food system more sustainable, profitable, and globally competitive.

Datasense’s contribution

Datasense Oy participates in AGCLIMATE as a technology partner specializing in greenhouse gas measurement systems, sensor integration, and cloud-based data services. Through its GHG Research Suite, Datasense provides comprehensive solutions for monitoring CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O emissions in real field conditions.

Datasense’s role in AGCLIMATE is to develop and refine integrated measurement systems that connect automated field instrumentation, cloud analytics, and AI-assisted data processing.

By combining field-level measurements with advanced data analytics, Datasense strengthens the credibility of emission assessments and supports the adoption of climate-smart farming practices.

Through AGCLIMATE, Datasense continues its mission to promote environmental wellbeing and sustainable agriculture through reliable, high-quality data.
