Description

The Growing Degree Day (GDD) Station is designed for field crops, forage grass, berry and fruit cultivation, and specialty crops—applications where tracking the progress of the growing season is essential.

The device measures air temperature and humidity, and the Fluxcloud service calculates the effective growing degree days. At the same time, humidity and dew point monitoring provide valuable insights into disease risks, irrigation needs, and optimal timing of crop protection measures. The station also functions as a simple frost monitor.

All measurements are automatically transmitted to the Farmiaisti web and mobile applications, where you can view real-time GDD accumulation and environmental data. The collected data enables plot-specific decisions, long-term trend analysis, and optimization of field operations.

The sensor is housed in a radiation shield, ensuring reliable measurements by eliminating errors caused by direct sunlight. The device is maintenance-free, battery-powered, weatherproof, and designed for long-term operation without mains power.

Applications and Benefits

  • Grassland cultivation: Monitor GDD accumulation and schedule harvest at the optimal time to preserve feed quality

  • Field and specialty crops: Track crop development and optimize fertilization and crop protection timing

  • Disease risk assessment: Use humidity and dew point data to predict the spread of foliar diseases

  • Frost risk detection: Dew point and near-zero temperature readings help estimate frost probability

  • Real-time monitoring: Data is automatically available on your phone and in the Farmiaisti portal

  • Long-term data: Cloud storage enables comparisons and supports data-driven decisions

  • Low power consumption: Operates for several years on batteries — up to 5 years in stable network conditions; battery replacement recommended every 3 years before the growing season

  • Low drift: No need for annual calibration (temperature drift <0.03 °C/year); for critical humidity monitoring, recalibration every 1–2 years is recommended
